mean with three-inch claws.
2004-08-11 : 11:10 a.m.

I want a pet koala bear in the worst way. And before you all start emailing me about how theyre grouchy and mean and have 2-inch claws, please be advised that these are the precise reasons why I want a koala bear. They sound kind of like meexcept for the claws.

Moving right along...

Last night was the regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Diversity Center (formerly the Gay + Lesbian Community Center of San Antonio). It was an unusually productive and friendly meeting. We voted to appoint Rebecca Cross as our liaison to the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, a decision that basically represents our desire to move beyond the terrible rift and falling-out that happened between the organizations several years ago. None of us on the current Board know exactly what the issue was, but I for one hold the Esperanza Center in the highest regard. They advocate for all marginalized people at once, without engaging in a competitive hierarchy of oppressions, and they understand that peace and justice require art and celebration. In general, I think that they get it right just about every time.

Rebecca Cross is our newest Board Member. Shes absolutely stellar, and I hope she stays around for a long, long time. She quoted Cornel West last night...and I was in love! Welcome, Rebecca!

The Really Big News from last nights Board meeting is that we have officially decided to move the Center to a new space on the 500th block of San Pedro Ave. Its a big move for us, financially and organizationally as well as physically. The space is ideally located, but the facility itself needs some work. Okay, lots of work. It is less accessible to some disabled people than we would like. I managed to convince the Board to amend our resolution to make some additional accessibility-related demands of the landlord, and to make accessibility our highest priority in all future facilities spending.

It will be great to get out of that dingy church basement. It will be great to have our own space. Its great to step out on a limb...risk is fun!

Or thats what Im going to tell myself. Over and over and over again. Wheres my koala?
