life is a horrible nightmare
2004-01-08 : 12:19 p.m.

I strolled into work this morning, all ready for a productive, happy dayonly to find the bookkeeper, the Executive Director, and a database guy from the county clustered around the COMPIS server in my office.

The client data file is justgone. Poof. Gone. NTFS Undelete cant even find evidence of it having been deleted, overwrittenor even there in the first place. This means that the entire client database for our Case Management caseload is missing. The guy from the county comes out and extracts that data every once in a while, but the most recent export was in November.

And of course, because in this setting, Im the computer guy, they all expect me to be able to fix it. But of course, I dont even understand whats happened here. At all.

Incidentally, Dear Reader, this COMPIS is the crappy old DOS-based network application I talked about in my last entry. Remember how I said that it ran on a server that is a total piece of shit? Bingo. Here we are, the inevitable has happened, and naturally everyone has totally forgotten my dire warnings about how we had no provisions for backing up the server and that it would die some day.
